As the largest work group, Transportation includes the most varied activities. It keeps the trains moving by managing the operations workforce from Train Dispatchers and Brakemen to Locomotive Engineers, Conductors and Trainmasters who work together to create a safe work environment. The employees in this organization move customer goods to destinations across the Alaska Railroad system, always focused on the primary goal of safe and efficient transportation of goods and passengers to meet our customers' expectations.
As a part of the Operations Division, the Maintenance Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of ARRC's hundreds of miles of roadway, track structures, facilities, bridges and tunnels traveled by the trains operated each and every day. Heavy equipment operators and mechanics are a key support resource in this department. Our Track maintenance crews work in some of the most beautiful country in the world.
The Mechanical Division keeps over 60 locomotives and over 1700 passenger and freight cars in serviceable condition. The Mechanical team is responsible for the daily operation of a locomotive overhaul back shop and two locomotive maintenance facilities involved with preventive maintenance, repairs and servicing of equipment. Preventive maintenance, modifications, and heavy repairs to railcars are performed at our two car shops.
The Safety and Health group is dedicated to improving workplace safety by creating an awareness and performance expectation in safety and health through employee participation, education, and leadership at all levels.
Our Passenger Operations group ensures that the thousands of people who travel on the Alaska Railroad every year have an experience they'll always remember.
The Projects Group is responsible for the design, construction and oversight of the Alaska Railroad internal and federally funded capital projects. From straightening miles of track to ensure greater safety and increased speeds to rerouting track away from potentially dangerous road grade crossings, the Projects Group's many engineers and support staff are busy expanding the vertical and horizontal structures of the Alaska Railroad. The Signals and Telecommunications Group are an important part of the future of the Railroad, as we move toward computer-assisted dispatch and GPS monitoring of train locations. The Information Services Group provides wide-ranging support for complex automated business and operating systems.
At the Alaska Railroad, we understand that to be effective, a transportation services company must understand its customers' needs just as well as the customer does. Our Marketing Sales and Services Department is a team of professionals comprised from freight marketing, logistics, passenger sales and marketing, and customer service. Our Passenger Services group provides outstanding reservation, ticketing and tour services to the thousands of people that travel on the Alaska Railroad every year.
The Finance Department makes sure that the company stays on budget and meets it profitability goals by overseeing all financial activities, including budgeting, auditing, regulatory agencies, taxes and reporting.
Employees determine the ARRC's success. The Human Resource Department has responsibility for the development and administration of all employment related policies including compensation, health, life and pension benefits, drug and alcohol program management, training and development, and recruitment. This full-service department is comprised of a corporate staff supporting all ARRC divisions.
To keep the Railroad running, you need a purchasing, supply and warehouse team that works cooperatively with the operating departments, ensuring that the right materials and services arrive at the right time.
Like many railroads, the ARRC owns land along the right-of-way and in others areas of the State. A dedicated team of professionals manage these assets through permits and leases, creating a revenue stream that makes a significant contribution to the bottom line.
