Portage Reserve Wetlands Mitigation Bank

What is a Wetlands Mitigation Bank?

Development in Southcentral Alaska is necessary to create a bustling economy with jobs that allow residents to provide for their family.  Unfortunately, sometimes that development comes at the expense of our wilderness.  To help preserve our vital ecosystem, the Alaska Railroad has set aside 240 acres of pristine wetlands in Portage, Alaska.  By setting aside these wetlands, the Alaska Railroad is able to both encourage development in Southcentral Alaska and save these vital wetlands for future generations.

Tell me about the credits available.

A majority the Alaska Railroad’s land in Portage is comprised of palustrine wetlands and as such, the Railroad is able to offer up to 149 palustrine credits.

Where can the credits be used?

The palustrine credits available in the Alaska Railroad’s Portage Reserve Wetland Mitigation Bank are available to offset development within the Municipality of Anchorage, as well as the Matanuska Susitna and Kenai Peninsula Boroughs.  Please see the below maps for a complete representation of the areas covered.
