Talkeetna was established in 1919 and is located at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna Rivers. Flightseeing, rafting, mountain biking, hiking, camping, and fishing are popular activities in Talkeetna, which is about 3 hours from Anchorage by train, or 2.5 by car. The core downtown area is classified as a National Historic Site, with buildings dating from the early 1900s including Nagley's General Store, the Talkeetna Roadhouse, and the Fairview Inn – the last of which hosted President Warren Harding during his 1923 trip to see the completion of the Alaska Railroad.
On a clear day, Talkeetna offers incredible views of Denali, making it a popular destination for tourists each summer. The many made-in-Alaska products from local artists, musicians and craftspeople add to the town’s charm. During the summer, it's common to see the main street in downtown Talkeetna bustling with locals and visitors alike.
Talkeetna is a year-round destination for the Alaska Railroad: in addition to twice-daily summer service by the Denali Star Train, Talkeetna is also home to the Hurricane Turn Train, a round-trip flagstop service that departs Talkeetna in the summertime every Thursday through Monday. In the winter, Talkeetna is a stop for both the winter Hurricane Turn as well as the Aurora Winter Train.
